I know this has been briefly mentioned before, but I didn't find much on the reason for adding a vrayCommon tab, instead of just using MayaCommon tab. The only explanation ( I found) was that there were additional parameters to the vrayCommon tab. Couldn't those additional parameters be put into the settings or some other tab? You mention that vray saves file formats that Maya doesn't support, so this might be tough to get around, but I'd ask that you try to find a way, since having 2 tabs that need particular settings is very inconvenient. Yes we can script our way around it, but all our old scripts would just work, if vray supported Maya's common tab normally.
Plus, you are forcing each team to script pipeline tools they shouldn't have to, just to get vray to render they way Maya expects. Some examples:
1. We've run into submissionToDeadline issues that cause each slave to render the entire animation instead of it's single frame. I read similar issues with Rush. Yes, we can fix with scripts. Why should we have to though?
2. Frame ranges in Deadline seem to be taken from the MayaCommon tab, not the vrayCommon, so we have to manually enter frame ranges, write a script to fix, or enter redundant ranges into the maya tab.
You may consider the issues trivial, but I miss the maya common tab, and not having to second-guess the output settings in the heat of a major project. Sorry if this sounds like a rant... just been percolating for a while
