  • VRayFur Noise

    Hey.

I've been playing a bit with vray fur and I can't seem to get it not to flicker out of the box.
It feels soft at the center, and too sharp at sides.
Also, when it is moving it flickers. The compression makes it less noticeable.

I'm attaching the video, some actual frames and the scene:

    some details:

    dome light
    2 rect lights

    filter Area 1.5
    dmc 5/10
    thres 0.01

What sampler settings you use to render your VRayfur?

What kind of GI engine are you using? It is somewhat hard to say if the noise is because of AA, or because of GI.

If it is because of AA, then things to do would be to decrease the color threshold for AA, to increase the max. AA subdivs a but, to use a slightly blurry AA filter like Gaussian with size 2.0, or make the fur slightly transparent at the tips instead of using tapering. You can use the VRay Fur Sampler shading node to make hair more transparent along the strands. Transparency will increase the render times though.

If it is because of GI, then increasing the GI subdivs might help.

      Best regards,

        Thank you, man.

        It has no GI.

What AA color threshold are you talking about? I can't find it. Did you mean the IM color threshold by any chance?

I get this message when I try to connect the VRayFurSampler to the vCoord of a ramp, that I'll connect to the opacity of a shader:

// Error: Can't find the output parameter for node type: VRayFurSampler.

Anyway, the thing is that I like that sharpness the hair has. The problem is when I animate it. It has a weird looking. I'm not sure if you've downloaded the mediafire link, but there are 3 frames. Perhaps you will be able to see that. If you prefer I can email you some frames?

I mean, I've worked with fur in mental ray, maya, renderman, and this is a different kind of flicker. Is not GI, is not shadow subdivision. I'm not sure what it is.

If you don't use GI, then where is the light coming from? A dome light?
