  • Maya 2011 SP1 64 for OSX - crashes all the time when I try to render

    So I finally got around to install everything, even manually adding an environment variable that the installer wouldn't create. and the plugin seems to load and all. But if I try to render it crashes Maya and if I go to the console I get the following errors:

    Console Messages.txt

    Any ideas?! I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.6), on i7 2.66 macbook pro.

    Cheers

      For OS X, the V-Ray environment variables are written to the Maya.env file. If you take a look at it, do you see them there? Also, it might be necessary to log out and then back for the variables to take effect.

      Best regards,

        Hey, Vlado

        Sorry for the delay, but my HD fried and it took a few days to get a replacement from Apple.
        Anyway, I checked the maya.env and there was no reference to Vray there. I then added the following myself:

        VRAY_FOR_MAYA2011_MAIN_x64 = /Applications/Autodesk/maya2011.5/Maya.app/Contents/vray

        and it caused the plugin to load fine (i also deleted from my OSX environment variable plist). The same error occurs though and maya freezes and crashes.

        Cheers

          Since Maya 2011 subscription advantage pack version have all its folders named 2011.5 that may be a problem for V-Ray for Maya to install properly.

          We have a workaround that you can try.
          Please first uninstall V-Ray for Maya and any third party plug-ins. Then rename Maya 2011.5 folders.
          You can do this in the terminal by using this command:
          sudo mv /Applications/Autodesk/maya2011.5 /Applications/Autodesk/maya2011

          or you can change the default path during installation Maya 2011.5 to match the above.
          Last step is to install V-Ray for Maya 2011 and make a test render.

          To make sure that everything is set-up correctly please create the default Maya 2011.5 installation folder and to put there symbolic links to the "icons", "plug-ins" and "scripts" sub-solders which are located in the new 2011.5 folder.

          Let us know if this works for you.

            Hi there,

            I tried your workaround and it didn't work
            So I tried something else: I went to the terminal and typed "env" to get the environmental variables and I copied all the vray-related variables into the Maya.env file (which had none prior to this). After doing so, it finally worked!!
            I guess you guys need to add the variables to that file instead cause with them in the system's environment variables alone it didn't work, at least in my machine. For some reason vray wouldn't see them.

            Thanks for the help.

              BTW, the variables I copied are these:

              VRAY_FOR_MAYA2011_PLUGINS_PowerPC=/Applications/Autodesk/maya2011/Maya.app/Contents/vray/vrayplugins
              VRAY_FOR_MAYA2011_PLUGINS_x64=/Applications/Autodesk/maya2011/Maya.app/Contents/vray/vrayplugins
              VRAY_PATH=:/Applications/ChaosGroup/V-Ray/Maya2011-x64/bin/x64/vc6
              VRAY_FOR_MAYA2011_MAIN_PowerPC=/Applications/Autodesk/maya2011/Maya.app/Contents/vray
              VRAY_FOR_MAYA2011_MAIN_x64=/Applications/Autodesk/maya2011/Maya.app/Contents/vray

              Cheers

                I just found out, digging into my Maya preference files and stuff, that the vray installer did, indeed add the variables to the maya.env, but instead of adding it to my current version of maya (2011.5) it added to the previous version (2011) which was still there in the preferences folder.
                So here we go...
