  • render errors: white dots from Vray sphere lights

I getting some odd render errors. Little white dots:

This is coming from a VraySphere light. If I disable the light the dots go away. However if I turn off "affect diffuse" and "affect specular" they remain(!). These artifacts change with a moving camera at every frame, flickering on and off. I tried increasing the light's subD from 8 to 64 but this had no affect.

I thought it may have something to do with the render settings because before I was getting buzzing in the texture in those areas and so I increased the quality in the render settings, using the Nederhorst method (adaptive DMC, min sub 2, Max 25, thres .005).

If I switch back to adaptive subdivision in the globals the dots go away (but then I get buzzing in the animation there). If I keep adaptive DMC and set the min SubD to 1 (not 2) and raise the threshhold from .005 to .1 the dots also go away. This seems odd, because it would appear that worse settings are giving better results.

If I switch to a Maya spot light the problem is gone. So this appears to be a problem particular to the Vray lights. Weird.

    Some side notes:
    1) ray traced soft shadows (from Maya lights set with angle) are not showing up in IPR.
    2) how doe one make a soft shadow with a vray light? I tried increasing the radius, but this did not seem to have any affect on the shadow (or at best a very negligible one).

    thanks!

Does it go away if you make the light invisible to reflections?

For V-Ray lights, the softness of the shadows is determined by the size of the light (which seems to work fine here).

We are aware of the issue with soft shadows from point lights and V-Ray RT; this will be fixed.

Sorry, I just realized I posted this in the wrong forum. This is a Maya scene. Can an admin move it there, or should I repost?

To answer your question: if I turn off trace reflections on the Vray material the dots disappear.

I meant the "affect reflections" option in the light; not the reflections of the material.

Could it be, that it is caused from GI refractive caustics turned on??

Yes, turning off the "affect reflections" option in the light makes it go away. Of course I do want the light the affect reflections, so this isolates the problem, but does not solve it.

Again, I stress that I am working in Maya and not Max.

Would it be possible to send me just the problem part of the scene to vlado@chaosgroup.com so that I can track down the problem?

                Best regards,
