  • Mapping reflection or refraction IOR

I'm trying to map the refraction IOR with a texture, but vray doesn't seem to map the texture. It just takes the color at uv(0,0). I've also tried with different procedual textures and other shading nodes but without any luck.

Just made a simple test and texture mapped IOR seems to work just fine. Are you sure your object has UVW-coordinates?

Also, don't forget to push the texture's values beyond 1.0 to get an IOR over 1.0, V-Ray does not do this automatically so any non-blown out color in the texture will result in an IOR less than 1.0!

IMO the easiest way to do this:

My object has uv-coordinates and if I map the the texture to something else like diffuse, reflection color etc it works fine. I've remaped the texture to get values over 1.0 like in your picture. I've also tried with proceduals like checker, rams, blend color.. So I'm sure the values are correct.

I've also just made a test with MentalRay using the same object and texture and it works.

Anyway the picture you posted is from Max, so it might be an issue with vray for maya.

How are you connecting the texture?
As far as I can see the VRayMtl doesn't support textures for the Refraction IOR attribute.

I've tried connecting alpha (and setting the alpha is luminance checkbox), or connecting just one of the RGB channels. Neither seems to work.

But in my version of VRay For Maya, Refraction IOR doesn't support connections.
Can you show a screen shot.

                OK,
I've taken a look at the exporter and the Refraction IOR is exported as just a number, texture input is not supported at the moment.
I'm logging a issue about the problem and we'll try to fix it soon.

                      Unfortunately it isn't fixed, yet.

This should be fixed for the next build.

                        Best regards,
