  • Scene bounding box is too large

    Hi,

we have a very large scene (half of Berlin) which is build in 1:1 scale. The Maya unit is set to 1 cm. So the scene is 600.000 units large.

Now Vray complains that the "Scene bounding box is too large, possible raycast erros" and that the "Scene is too far away from origin, possible raycast erros".

The rendered images looks okay. Only thing that doesn't seems to work is DOF with physical camera. When we set the focus to 30.000 the whole image is sharp, even with a very small f-stop value.

Should we scale down the whole scene with a factor of 1000?

    Thanks,
    Lars

You can usually ignore the warning; things will render fine.

For the DOF - can you tell me what are your scene units?

    Best regards,
    Vlado

      Good to know. Thanks, Vlado.

Scene units are set to cm. Scene is about 600.000 units large.

Hm, should you be getting much DOF for 300 m focus distance (or is that 30 cm - but then I doubt that half of Berlin is 600 cm only)?

        Best regards,
        Vlado

The scene is 600.000 cm = 6000 meters. Focusing on 300 meters gives me a sharp image. But I check that in a minute with a new camera.

Yes, sorry, 6000 m, my mistake

NO, it is not working. When I set the focus to 23000 = 230 meters, the image is sharp allover.

              The same when I set the focus to 2500 = 25 meters. With focus = 250 = 2,5 meters I get a DOF effect.

              Physical camera, type=movie, f-number=4, shutter angle=180.

              Any ideas?

              TIA
              Lars

It might be that the result is correct (even if it may not be what you want) - DOF is apparent only with relatively small focus distances, or when an object is very close. In any case, you can always use the standard DOF (without the physical camera) - it may be quicker to get the desired effect this way.

                Best regards,
                Vlado

Thanks Vlado. Your are right: With our settings you get a depth of field from 15m to infinity. So VRay calculates totally right.
