  • 2 Objects 1 Ptex

It's possible to export multiple objects as 1 OBJ export. You can then paint on that in Mari and it will ask if you want to export multiple ptex files, or keep everything as one.

So if I just keep it one big ptex, when I assign the ptex to the separate OBJ's then render in V-Ray I basically get mush. I can only get my ptex textures back if I render the ptex on the geo as 1 whole object.

My question is this. Can ptex support 1 object painted, with separate objects using the same ptex in V-Ray?

    Thanks!

Nope, it won't work. The PTex data is connected to the index of each quad or triangle face; as you combine or separate objects, these indices no longer match and V-Ray has no way to know what they originally were in Mari.

OK Thanks.. If I was using $CHANNEL_$GEO.ptex from Mari as my output so the ptex files were: diffuse_head.ptex. What would be the quickest workflow to automatically plug those into the ptex reader, and vray shader?

      Thanks!

For the moment, you will have to do it manually by creating distinct PTex textures, each assigned to the appropriate slot of the material for the appropriate object. When we add the ability to override the bitmap file names for File and PTex textures with user V-Ray attributes, it will be a lot easier.

Cool. Let me know when that's ready to test.
