  • Conflict between Vray 2.0 & MaxwellRender Plugins for Maya

Hi, I don't know if you realized about this, but switching between this two render engines, Vray& Maxwell inside Maya could finish in errors or crashes. Specially if you have inside Maya some render layers, each one with its corresponding overrides for geometry materials and render engines.

Its strange, Maya never crash at changing between Maya Vector to Maya Software, or between Mentral Ray and Maya Hardware, or any other combination.

Talking about this with the Maxwell support, they say they'd like take a look at the issue. I'm not secure if they was really talking seriously, or if really now can add this issue to its roadmap, but well, if you have time to take a look at the issue, appears would be possible you count with they.

I can confirm this as well. Having both plug-ins installed created many headaches during a recent animation I was working on. Vray was crashing religiously to a point where I had to start from scratch with an entire new scene again. I couldn't/didn;t know how to unload the maxwell plug-in properly. I think having both plug-ins installed also caused catastrophic failures on one particular renderfarm. They refunded me $2500 in rendering fees so they will remain nameless. For the record I wasn't even using multiple render layers. My advice, if you want to miss a deadline use both plugins!

Which OS was that? Windows/Linux/Mac OS X? If you can get us more precise reproduction steps, or a scene, it will be helpful.

      Best regards,
      Vlado

        Hi Vlado,

It was Mac OS 10.6.8, Maya 2012, Vray 2.0, Maxwell Fire V2.5.12. I will have to unarchive the job and retest. Be back in a couple of days....

Well I had a quick look at my old scene files and realised that I had done a fresh install of Maya straight after that job, so there is no Maxwell plug-in currently loaded on my system. So I can't exactly replicate this scenario again. From memory Maya would crash if I opened the hypershade and also during rendering. Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

In my case, Win7_64 & Linux Ubuntu 64. Same scene with Vray materials in a render layer, and Maxwell materials in a Maxwell layers. When switch from maxwell layer (which has, like override rendered at Maxwell) to vray layer (with Vray like override renderer)... anything can happens.

The issue Peter has mentioned, the impossibility to unload Maxwell plugin is caused because a not-existent loaded node of type "maxwellPreviewData" appears impossible to unload. If you take it with patience, it is related with the Maxwell system for user can preview the maxwell materials. If someone want take a look (and have access to the maxwell forum), here:
            http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/v...?f=101&t=37262

Although the "we gonna investigate it" maxwell support tell it to me directly using the e-mail.

Nevermind, here in the Vray forum, what is important is to know why Maya crashes when two plugins switch from Maxwell to Vray.

How I said, appears in Next Limit too have the will to research about it, probably if Chaos have a time they will be disposed to collaborate, but...

The only thing Peter & I can do is prepare some kind of scene where switching between plugins do crash Maya.

Yes, if you can do that, it will be very helpful.

I haven't forgotten this issue, just its hard to get a "conflictive file" for give you.

While happens odd things in important scenes of serious projects with complex systems, appears I can't get if "failing" with a simple cube. When I get a scene failing, I'll report it again (but for say the truth, I want not mix the two render engines again anymore, I'd like to know where's the bug, but I want not risk another important scene, and the first one is now fixed and separated in two versions...

I havn't forgotten about this too. Reaversworld, I share your same apprehension about affecting another important file/project by having both plug-ins installed. I have simple job that I'm working on at the minute, once it's finished I might have another go at replicating these crashes.

                  Cheers
