  • Render frozen at 0%

    Hi,

This is on Maya2012 SAP (includes SP1), VRay nightly 2.15.01 build 17175 (22/10/2011), Windows Seven 64bit.

Almost once a day, I get renders that freeze, using the Render View.

After loading a scene and modifying a few things, I start a render.
It works all right, it completes in 20 seconds.
A few minutes later I try a second render.
The completion bar starts at 0%, and stays stuck at 0% (no matter how long I wait).

If I click on the Render View to try a region render, I get this :
    // Warning: Rendering is not re-entrant. //

The only way to stop the freezing is to open a menu from the Render View, I get this :
// Error: There was a fatal error updating the scene at time 195.000000 for V-Ray //

Then I save the scene, and kill maya.

I restart maya, load the same scene I just saved, now the render works all right.

I can't replicate it, as those scenes work all right when you load them.
It happens with different projects, on scenes completely different.

    Any idea ?

    Thanks.

I have some more information, here is what is displayed in maya's Output Window when the render is frozen :

    [2011/Nov/7|12:13:16] V-Ray: Loading plugins from "\\kyoto\pub_dev\bin\maya\Modules\2012\vray\vraypl ugins/vray_*.dll"
    [2011/Nov/7|12:13:19] V-Ray: 103 plugin(s) loaded successfully
    [2011/Nov/7|12:13:19] V-Ray: Finished loading plugins.
    [2011/Nov/7|12:13:19] V-Ray: Exporting scene to V-Ray.
    [2011/Nov/7|12:13:19] V-Ray: Parsing light links time 0h 0m 0.0s (0.0 s)
    [2011/Nov/7|12:13:19] V-Ray: Translating scene geometry for V-Ray

    I have to kill maya.
Then I restart maya, load the same scene, render, it works all right :

    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:53] V-Ray: Loading plugins from "\\kyoto\pub_dev\bin\maya\Modules\2012\vray\vraypl ugins/vray_*.dll"
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:55] V-Ray: 103 plugin(s) loaded successfully
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:55] V-Ray: Finished loading plugins.
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:55] V-Ray: Exporting scene to V-Ray.
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:55] V-Ray: Parsing light links time 0h 0m 0.0s (0.0 s)
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:55] V-Ray: Translating scene geometry for V-Ray
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:55] V-Ray: (Estimated time remaining: 0h 0m 0.0s): 65 % completed
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:55] V-Ray warning: kParticleSamplerInfo
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:55] V-Ray warning: kParticleSamplerInfo
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:55] V-Ray: Total time translating scene for V-Ray 0h 0m 0.6s (0.6 s)
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:55] V-Ray: Rendering.
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:55] V-Ray: Rendering frames.
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:55] V-Ray: Updating frame at time 196.00
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:57] V-Ray: Total time updating frame 0h 0m 1.4s (1.4 s)
    [2011/Nov/7|12:14:57] V-Ray: Preparing renderer...
[2011/Nov/7|12:14:57] V-Ray: Preparing scene for rendering...

    ...etc...
Then the frame is correctly rendered.

Most of the time, it happens like this :
I render, it works all right, render is finished.
I go get a coffee (maya is doing nothing at that time).
When I come back, one CPU is working without reason (Task Manager indicates it's the maya process).
If I try to render, it freezes as indicated above.

Sounds like a problem we are having, and I think it is a maya (rather than a vray) issue. In our case we can get the render to continue by clicking outside the VFB then clicking inside. We have to keep doing this. Each time the VFB becomes active the render progresses to the next percentage. To get it to finish requires a lot of clicking!
Autodesk support suggested a possible fix, which is to add a new variable to your Maya.env file.
      MAYA_DISABLE_IDLE_LICENSE = 1
I've had this set for almost 2 days and have not seen a reoccurrance of the freezing, though it may be too early to say for sure. Maybe you can give it a try though.

Thanks djx, I will try this env var.

No more freeze since I set this env var, so it was a maya bug, not a VRay bug.
          Thanks djx !
