  • DR rendering on Linux

    Hi everyone,

i'm currently having a few questions regarding Distributed Rendering, render flags and licensing in general.

    1) If i have one workstation license, i have 10 render licenses, right? Can those renderslaves be used to render a scene without a workstation to initiate the DR rendering? In other words, is it possible to have 10 slaves render a scene while i work on another one with my workstation? Do render licenses always have to be triggered from the one workstation license i have?

    2) During the process of rendering, where is the temporary imagedata being stored? Is there a way to visually check the progress of a rendering when rendering via the command line? On windows i could always just convert the .vrimg in progress and see how far it is... (how) can i check the status of the current .vrimg on linux???

    3) Is there a command line flag to enable/disable DR rendering or does it always refer to the current last used Maya settings? For example i write a batch file with 5 renderjobs to be calculated via DR, but for the last job i don't want all slaves to participate. How could i do that?

    Thanks in advance
    Rasmus

You can use Maya batch or V-Ray Standalone to render your scene with DR. In that case it will only take render licenses.

You can do the same on Linux. Or, if you use V-Ray Standalone to render, it can show the V-Ray VFB with the current progress.

For the standalone, you specify the render slaves on the command line, so what you want is trivial to do. If you use Maya batch, it is more complicated and would require you to modify the V-Ray DR settings file (I need to check where it is located on Linux).
