  • Vray 2.x renders same scene darker than Vray 1.5

    Hi there,
    I need to rerender stills from some scenes I've been working on in the beginning of 2011. I created the scenes with Maya 2011 and one of the

    nightly builds before Vray 2.0 came out.
    When trying to render the same images again with Vray 2.0 they get way too dark, regardless whether I use Maya 2011 or 2012. I installed

    several nightly builds as well as the stable 2.1 version but the problem persisted. Anyhow, after reinstalling the old VRay 1.5 version the

    images look as they should.

    I am using linear workflow, rendering 32 bit images and I use a VRay physical cam. I experienced strange behaviour with this camera before

    (e.g. disappearing "Extra VRay Attributes" field in the attribute editor). Could it be there is a bug with the camera? Or is there another

    explanation? I'd love to be able to rerender my images without having to reinstalling an older version of Vray...

      Hello Vlado - wow, that was a quick reply The scene has VRay Sun and Sky and some VRay Rectangle Lights.

        This is the reason why we keep all production versions of vray in our repository...just to start maya using whatever version is needed...what was the date of your project...maybe support can send you older versions of vray from that time...it's the only way to go!

          There was a change to how the sun and sky are rendered when not using a physical camera, perhaps this is what is causing the difference.

            I've had the same problem. If you remove and re add the physical cam it can be fixed.

              So if that's the case (which sounds as because I DO use the physical cam) I can't do anything about it?

              I already tried that because it also has ocurred to me that I had to replace the physical cam before. Anyhow, this time this doesn't help.

                In order to get the same intensity like in V-Ray 1.5 you have to multiply the intensity of the sun by 0.0625.

                  Thanks Teoder but my renderings with Vray 2.0 already are less bright than the 1.5 ones. Mulitplying the sun's intensity by 0.0625 would make them even darker.

                      Thanks, Teodor. Even when dividing the sun's intensity by 0.0625 (i.e. multiplying it by 16) I don't get the same result that I get with VRay 1.5. I also tried multiplying the sky's intensity and the Primary Bounce Multiplier by 16 but I never get the same result.

                      Anyhow, for this particular job I reinstalled VRay 1.5 and after finishing it I installed 2.0 again.
