I think I found a small bug, to reproduce this error.
A - open the maya render view, check the "render selected objects only" box
B - render stuff in the VFB
C - go back and uncheck "render selected objects only"
D - hit batch render -error occurs- batch render renders nothing if nothing is selected
to fix the problem:
between C and D hit render in the VFB
as a side note, I wish that option was available on the VFB it's super useful!
