  • Vray and Ptex

So I'm having a bit of a problem with ptex. I've never used them before. I created a ptex file from a texture I painted in Mari. I took the object I painted the texture on, applied a vray material. Dropped the ptex node into the diffuse slot. It works partially but most of it renders out flat black. Certain polys have textures on them but most don't. Any idea what is going on? Whats happening? What am I doing wrong?

    Please advise.
    Thanks!

I'm EXTREMELY keen to use ptex but I've not delved into it yet, this is the kind of problem I'd come up against so I'm watching the thread eagerly
    (I hope it's a simple tweak)

Thanks. I hope so too. I'll say one more thing. I DID get ptex working last night with a texture I painted in mudbox (vs. the previous post where I painted one in Mari which I still haven't figured out yet). I painted a single piece of my rather substantial model. The ptex file itself for that single piece of geometry was 183MB. The render jumped from 34 seconds before I added the texture to 1 hour and 34 minutes after I added the texture. Again, just for that one piece of geometry. Needless to say, I still have a lot of figuring out to do on the ptex workflow. See the attached files for reference. Be certain to notice the render times at the bottom.

For large PTex files, make sure to increase the cache size parameter in the VRayPTex texture; the default is a few megabytes which may cause a big slowdown if the texture doesn't fit.

Other than that, make sure that the geometry that comes in is exactly the same as the one you painted in Mari/Mudbox (e.g. no vertex reordering or anything).

        Best regards,
        Vlado
