  • Seperate reflection pass: Frosted glass

    Hi

I have a frosted glass light box containing neon tubes. I have built the glass using glossy refractions.
However I'd like to have an outer layer of reflectivity, so that it has a similar feel to a lightbox for viewing slides, etc.
It's extremely slow to adjust the reflectivity of this outer layer whilst having to compute the glossy refractions every time. So i'd like to create a seperate pass with exagerrated reflections (ie a material override over everything) which i can adjust in post.

So far i have achieved the desired result by creating a second render layer, with a layer override that has a highly reflective material. I comp this in post and it does the job.

However for simplicity i'd like to have this refection pass as a channel within the same exr as the frosted glass. If i use 'Material select' it seems to only choose the materials already in the scene (ie the frosted glass material, which i cant get right). However I want to use a new material. If i use 'Extra tex' this seems to work only with texture nodes and not materials. Or am i doing something wrong? Is there a way to create an 'extra material' pass? Or just an extra pass with a material override specifically for reflections?

How do most people do this? Any help would be great

    thanks
