  • V-Ray error: There was a fatal error building the scene for V-Ray.

I'm rendering a scene. When I render locally everything works fine.
When I try to render to my render farm however I get a:

V-Ray error: There was a fatal error building the scene for V-Ray.

And it quits out before any frame is rendered. I cannot figure out what the problem is.
I'd like to send the maya file for evaluation but its too big at about 150MB.
Any ideas of what might be the problem or what causes the fatal error?

    Thanks!!

    Hi,
Do you use Python access to the translated V-Ray scene ?

I'm not certain what that means, so I'm guessing probably not.

Our render manager is a program called Qube. Other scenes are rendering out fine, so I believe it is a problem with this specific scene for some reason (even though it is a scene I've been rendering successfully for weeks). An associate animated a character in the scene and now suddenly there is a fatal error every time we try to render on the farm. As far as I know there hasn't been any python involved in the work we've been doing.

Is it possible that V-Ray is not properly installed on the render farm? Can you show me the entire output from a render server (or send to vlado@chaosgroup.com)?

        Best regards,

Doubtful as I test rendered an older version of the scene and that worked.

I have sent you an email with the output log.

is your character using vray subdivision?

It crashes in the translation phase, before getting to the actual render, so this doesn't matter... anyways I got the scene and I'm looking into it.

Yes. It has vray subdivision and displacement on it.

                  Try using this MEL script:

                  dgdirty -a

                  it worked for me.

Actually this turned out to be more like a Maya bug; the crash happened somewhere inside the Maya code when V-Ray tried to get the shader list for a particular scene object and was not related to subvisions. The crash happened with the original Maya 2012 release, but not with the advantage pack.
