  • Memory release take very long time

    Hi,
Here the problem, when my render is finished, i must to wait some minutes to have my image.

Here the log of a "test" render :

    [2012/Jun/28|16:44:28] V-Ray: Number of raycasts: 697380608
    [2012/Jun/28|16:44:28] V-Ray: Camera rays: 3995305
    [2012/Jun/28|16:44:28] V-Ray: Shadow rays: 677821017
    [2012/Jun/28|16:44:28] V-Ray: GI rays: 391554344
    [2012/Jun/28|16:44:28] V-Ray: Reflection rays: 6224636
    [2012/Jun/28|16:44:28] V-Ray: Refraction rays: 0
    [2012/Jun/28|16:44:28] V-Ray: Unshaded rays: 706979
    [2012/Jun/28|16:49:54] V-Ray: Number of intersectable primitives: 218780
Between "V-Ray: Unshaded rays: 706979" and "V-Ray: Number of intersectable primitives", with this render, i must to wait 5 min.

With my "final" render, i must to wait more than 30 min !
30 min by image (4500 images), it is a lot...

    V-Ray: V-Ray for Maya version 2.25.01 from Jun 20 2012, 16:20:06, Maya 2012, win64.
All geometries are proxy, all textures exr mipmapped tiled.

    Thanks.

Edit : V-Ray: Number of raycasts is false ?

It is on the "to do" list to improve this.

The number of raycasts is correct.

    Best regards,

      Ok, thanks for the answer.

Ps : did you have my email + scene about the VRayMultiProjection ?

          Hi,
I have a "big" scene and this problem is a nightmare.
          See the log :

          Code:
          R377| [2012/Oct/4|20:11:23] V-Ray: Number of raycasts: 5986679054
          R378| [2012/Oct/4|20:11:23] V-Ray: Camera rays: 294801052
          R379| [2012/Oct/4|20:11:23] V-Ray: Shadow rays: 3135559987
          R380| [2012/Oct/4|20:11:23] V-Ray: GI rays: 0
          R381| [2012/Oct/4|20:11:23] V-Ray: Reflection rays: 295347633
          R382| [2012/Oct/4|20:11:23] V-Ray: Refraction rays: 0
          R383| [2012/Oct/4|[b]20:11:23[/b]] V-Ray: Unshaded rays: 2260970382
          R384| [2012/Oct/4|[b]22:25:39[/b]] V-Ray: Number of intersectable primitives: 15668852
          R385| [2012/Oct/4|22:25:39] V-Ray: SD triangles: 24954
          R386| [2012/Oct/4|22:25:39] V-Ray: MB triangles: 6240
          R387| [2012/Oct/4|22:25:39] V-Ray: Static primitives: 10713
          R388| [2012/Oct/4|22:25:39] V-Ray: Moving primitives: 15626944
          R389| [2012/Oct/4|22:25:39] V-Ray: Infinite primitives: 1
Between Unshaded rays and Number of intersectable primitives : 2h14 to go to the next frame !
Lost 2h14 by frame is not acceptable.

I hope there is a solution.

          V-Ray: V-Ray for Maya version 2.25.01, revision 22344 from Sep 2 2012, Maya2012 win64

Can you get me a scene for this?

Maybe a stupid thing, but might help you:

I find that if I untick "Don't save image" it'll help Maya V-Ray speed after rendering.

Although I know your problem is different it may help a little bit with your speed.

Sorry for bumb'ing an old thread, but is there any update to this issue?

I'm running the latest stable of Vray and it takes forever to dump the memory after render, making testrendering unbearable. It seem to get worse when using tiled exrs. And lowering the global texture filter from 1 to .5 makes it alot worse.

Is there anyway to optimize this or a workaround to get vray to dump the memory faster?

There are some improvements in the latest nightly builds related to this, but we have more work to do on that. There is also a way to disable flushing of the textures at the end of the render, which may also help, but of course it keeps the RAM occupied (on the other hand, subsequent renders are somewhat faster as the data is already loaded).

                    Best regards,
                    Vlado

How do I keep the textures in memory? Would it work for local testrendering aswell?

                        Hi,

You can add " VRAY_MAYA_KEEP_BITMAPS to 1 " to the OS environment variables, so this should help.
But note that this is available only in the nightly builds.

                          having the opposite problem.

                          maya 2013 sp1
                          V-Ray for Maya version 2.25.01, revision 22764
                          win7 x64

When rendering locally, I'm watching my task manager. I render, and my memory fills with tiled EXRs. Render finishes, I still have my Maya file open, and memory is still pegged, until I start another render, then memory is dumped, and filled again. It's not until I close Maya that all my memory is released again.

Is this due to VRay, or is it due to tiled EXRs residing in memory until it's dumped?

                          Thanks for any insight.
