When using VFB in Maya 2013 SP1 the Hide Render View check box has no effect and the Render View still appears as well as the VFB.

Yes, it's known issue. Vlado's message regarding that is:
We had to disable the "Hide Render View" functionality as it was causing unexpected Qt crashes; unfortunately we also didn't find a way to easily prevent the Render View from popping up on re-render.
So for the moment I just keep the Render View somewhere towards the bottom of the screen out of the way until we figure how to work around this.
