  • Render regions without cropping borders...

    Hi @ll,

I'm currently in the process of batch rendering regions to place on top of old renderings. Unfortunately my MultiChannel EXR's get cropped to the specified region so i have to manually align all items in PS. Is there a way to have VRay render the specified region and fill the rest of the Original RenderResolution with black? Or in other words, is there a way to prevent Vray from cropping my original output resolution to the render region?

    Thanks in advance,
    Rasmus

Which program are you using to load the files in PS? V-Ray writes the proper data window information into the .exr file so that the reader can place it in its proper place in the entire image - however it is possible that your .exr reader does not recognize this information. If you view the image in e.g. exrdisplay, you'll see that the region appears in the correct place.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

He is talking about the multichannel exr bounding box, apparently photoshop reads that bounding box as the borders of the image. There is no way (to my knowledge) to fix that in photoshop, unless you reoutput the image from nuke into regular exr, or do not use multichannel exr at all.

Ah. Can't do much about that unfortunately. Wasn't there a plugin for PhotoShop that reads .exr files (ProEXR or something)? Does it do a better job out of it? The latest version also reads .vrimg files directly.

          Thanks for your help guys,

i'm glad you confirmed that issue. Currently i'm using MultiChannel .exr's as a workaround because our installed build was confirmed to have problems with .EXR output. Unfortunately i'm too restricted to install the latest build myself and our admin is on vacation... Thats why i came up with this problem on MultiChannel EXRs. With PS6 reading .EXR files directly i saw no need to use ProEXR again but i'll give it a try.

          Thanks again,
          Rasmus

            Hi rasmus,

Just a thought - I tried rendering regions and saving to multichannel exr and it seems to work like it should. Photoshop seems to read it nicely, although I have some problem with the additional channels I wanted to export, maybe proExr would read the file better (Nuke on the other hand is quite OK in reading channels/regions). Anyway - here's a screenshot, I'm not sure that this is what you're after, but I hope that helps.

              Hi Yolov,

thats exactly what i'm after, and i don't see the reason why it works on your end but not on mine. Only possible reason i could think of would be that i'm not rendering in the VFB but via batchrender/ command line. I'll try to investigate that when i find the time. Anyway i wonder what's wrong with your additional channels and which version of PS do you use?

Thanks for your help, i appreciate it! =)

              Best regards,
              Rasmus

I tried PS CS6, which seems to read the exr format, but doesn't seem to load the channels, unlike other compositing programs. I'll surely try the ProExr as soon as I get the time to do that and will write back to you if I find any other info that could be useful. In the mean time, could you share what version of Maya/V-Ray you are using? I did this with 2.20 stable and I can confirm it can be done with the latest nightly build via the VFB. I don't know however how much frames you need to do this for?

                Best regards,

It seems PS reads exr files, but just can't handle multichannel exr's. I tried proEXR and it does the job. Here's a screen:

I was able to batch render through the command line and get the uncropped multichannel EXR. I used -reg and I got the desired result. Here's a link to a thread in our forum where you'll find more information on the subject.
