  • Exclude Local Host From Distributed Rendering

Hello. We've just started using distributed rendering in Maya 2012/Vray 2 on Linux and I am noticing that in addition to the hosts on our farm that I specify, the job also seems to be rendering on my local host. While there are times I may desire this functionality, in general I would prefer to exclude my local host from this and only use the farm machines for the render, ala "netrender" in Renderman. Of course I am aware my local host still needs to serve out the job as well as collect the buckets, but aside from that, I don't want it to be part of the rendering process. How do I set this up? As mentioned, there may be times I would like to use this default functionality, but usually I do not. Being able to easily and quickly toggle it would be even more beneficial. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

This is not possible for the moment (although it is marked as a feature request); however you can reduce the number of rendering threads to 1 in the V-Ray system settings. This will cause the local machine to use just one thread, but the render servers will still use as many as they can.

    Best regards,

Ok, I see the threads setting, but even with this, it will still end up using as much memory as it needs on my box, putting me in nearly the same situation. Is there any solution for that as well, where I can set the max memory to use on my local host significantly lower than on the farm machines? Also, how long do you anticipate until this new feature request might be implemented? Thank you for the quick reply!

        Unfortunately not.

It depends on how urgent it is; currently it's somewhat low in priority, as we have some other things to look after, but if it is important, we can bump it up a bit.

For us, it's a bit of a big deal, as we have artists doing lookdev on machines which are older and netrendering on much newer, larger farm machines. Up until now, we have rendered exclusively in Renderman, and that has always provided us that flexibility, using Alfred and Tractor to manage our huntgroup, not only on specific nodes but on individual cores as well, for that specific purpose. As we are now integrating VRay into our toolset, this is an area that affects us greatly as we want to leverage our significant farm investment without having to necessarily upgrade our workstations simply for this purpose. If some others on the forum could weigh in that would be great, but I am surprised this isn't a bigger issue in the past from other studios. It would definitely be useful to simply have a checkbox in the Distributed Render Settings window that says "Exclude Local Host" to easily be able to toggle that on and off. Of course I don't know how much development or rewrite on your end that would entail, so not sure how trivial it would be to add, but if this is something that you would consider bumping up in priority, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for your quick feedback and help!

            Hi,

This feature should be available in the next nightly build.
I've added another option - "use local machine", it is on by default and when you disable it you'll get the desired behaviour.

Please test and report if there are any problems with it.

I just downloaded the 20121010 build...we will get this installed and let you know how it tests out on our end. Thank you again for implementing this!

Sorry, quick question...the archives we just downloaded unrar to .exe files for windows. I see the older date builds have the linux builds as well, are these just not done building yet, and if so can you let me know when they're ready? If not, where do we access the linux builds?

The linux builds from today have failed, we hope that tomorrow they'll build fine.
