I have a massive problem in that I can't get light to pass through an object. I have a sphere with thickness with a clear glass shader on. Inside this is another sphere with a simple diffuse texture on. I have affect shadows on and pretty much everything else I should. Does VRay not raytrace shadows or something. Someone please help. I just want to be able to see the object inside lit. Surely this is normal?

The only way I seem to be able to see the surface properly beneath in tuning off visible in refl and refrac of the other ball. Which is good but not right.KEITH ROGERS

Thanks for your reply Yolov but I don't have time to sort a sample out at the moment. I have something that's working for now but will come come back to you on this next week for sure. I need to get the bottom of it. It seems like the GI won't pass through the glass surface. Anyway, like I say hold tight till next week.KEITH ROGERS

Can you post a screenshot of the shader settings for the glass material or post a sample scene that doesn't render as expected on your end? Also any info on the Maya/VRay versions will be helpful?
Edit: Come to think of it, you mentioned disabling "generate/receive GI" in the vrayProperties on the outer sphere before. Are those options still off ?

My glass shader is out of the box created the same as yours. Receive and generate GI are still on in the object properties. Normals are correct and the geo has some thickness. I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary really. I'm using maya 2012 sp2 VRay 2.20 and have been for the last couple of years and never noticed this problem before. The glass doesn't need the GI I guess but having to turn this off on loads of different objects is a bit of a pain. Is this just the way it has to be?

Yes, I used GI for the sample image. Another possible reason for this that comes to mind is, that the inner ball has the same radius as the outer ball's inner part - the geometry is intersecting - in this case the inner (red) ball would be a bit darker. Here's an example:

Red inner ball is slightly smaller than the outer glass ball:
Is that the case in your scene?
