  • lens effect not predictable on instances?

    Hi there,

The lens effect seems to be mucking up, it's not working on some instances:

Every single one of those lights is an instance of each other, but only one of them works.

I've also noticed that objects ave the pixel intensity of .8 are not glowing either.

Is there a way to fix this?

Sorry, am I also right in saying that this is also not taking Self-Illuminated materials into account even if they are also above the intensity threshold?

      Hi snivlem,

What kind of lights have you used in your scene? Is there a difference in behavior between different kinds of lights? Also, could you tell us what Maya/V-Ray versions you are using?

      Best regards,

Hi, sorry for the late reply (happy holidays) it seems to be fine now using the latest builds.

However, there are still a few issues with it.

        1) The lens effect is not applied to batch renders, it will only seem to work with the VRay FB (Could this please, pretty please, be possible to fix).
It would be great if there was a system where the lens effect worked in Maya within the V-Ray FB but when it was batch rendered it went to a different output file and doesn't touch the beauty render.
        2) The first time rendering, V-Ray will never seem to calculate a glare mask, I always have re-render twice. Then it will work okay, it's just the very first render it doesn't seem to calculate.
        3) Self illumination on a VRayMtl doesn't affect the lens, even if the Color is floating above 1.
        4) When using DR, the buckets on the slave never calculate the bloom/glare, but the buckets on the local machine calculate it just fine.

          Hello snivlem

          According to your questions:

          1) The lens effect is not applied to batch renders - for now lens effects are working only with Vray Frame Buffer
          2) The first time rendering, V-Ray will never seem to calculate a glare mask - tested and reproduced - this is a bug - I'll make a note about it.
          3) Self illumination on a VRayMtl doesn't affect the lens - tested and not reproduced - on my side Self Illuminated materials influence Lens Effects- please send a scene to vraymaya@chaosgroup.com (include a link to this thread)
          4) When using DR, the buckets on the slave never calculate the bloom/glare - tested and reproduced - I'll make a note about it.

          5) All object instances generate correctly Lens Effects - please send a simplified version of the above scene to vraymaya@chaosgroup.com

Thank you very much in advance.

Thank you (again!) Svetlozar. I will try and put together some reproducible scenes for you when work is less busy.

However with your point, number 5, I have sinced changed my mind and you're right. This is not to do with instances, what was happening is that the DR buckets were landing on some lights and not generating so it is the same problem as number 4.

I feel rude to ask but is there possibly an estimated time for when Lens Effects will be addressed so that it can work with batch renders and DR nodes?

            Thank you.

            Kind Regards,

Unfortunately we are not able to give any time range for this fixes.
These bugs are already reported and our developers are informed about them - but it is difficult to predict when the solution will come out.
