V-ray causing Maya 2012 to hang for several minutes on start-up

When I try to load Maya 2012 with V-ray (or disable auto-load and then try and load V-ray manually in the Maya plugins window), Maya freezes for several minutes. Maya now also hangs when I do certain things in V-ray, seemingly at random. Loading Maya without V-ray works fine.

I've had this problem since installing 2.30.01 on my Maya 2012 installation (I didn't notice 2.3 is only for Maya 2013). I uninstalled 2.30.01 and reinstalled 2.20.01, but the problem persists. Is there somewhere I can find a log file to post so someone can help me figure out the problem?

okay, this has just gotten a whole lot worse. Upon loading a scene, Maya again hangs for several minutes, before all my V-ray material swatches appear like so

Oddly, they still display in the viewport.

it sounds like a license issue. Did you re-install the lice key drivers?

I wound up installing Maya 2013, and v-ray 2.30.01.

Everything is working now. Also reinstalled the license server.

This is very odd - Did you catch what is the reason for this slowdown ?
