  • Problem extracting zdepth in Flame

Ok. So this may be tricky to troubleshoot because I think you don't have any Flames to test renders on. But I can tell you we are unable to use the zdepth channel from Multichannel EXRs in Flame. We CAN use the zdepth channel from multichannel EXRs if they are rendered from MentalRay so that makes it seem like a vray problem.
Take a look at these two setups in flame.

This is a Vray setup in flame. You can see indicated by the green arrow that it is recognizing the zdepth as part of the beauty pass. But we can't get to it there. If you look down lower as indicated by the blue arrow you can see the different layer passes. In this case there is just a velocity pass (even though there should have been zdepth pass too)

This is the MentalRay setup in flame. You can see that the zdepth is NOT included in the beauty pass. But then if you look down at the blue arrow the first layer is the zdepth layer (as well as a shadow and diffuse pass).

Now I know that the vray render has a zdepth pass in there because I can see it in After Effects and in Nuke. But not in Flame. Does anyone know why this is the case? It adds a lot of complication to our workflow if we have to export the zdepth passes as a seperate non-multi-channel EXR every time we do a render.

If this helps here is a mental ray multi-channel EXR with a beauty and a zdepth and also a vray multi-channel EXR with beauty and zdepth.

This is a problem for us and I'd love to know how or if it can be fixed.
    Thanks!

It will be best to contact the Flame support for that. I've never seen a Flame box in my life so I have no idea how it works (same for our support guys). All I can say is that the Z-depth data is there and it's correctly displayed in Nuke, PDPlayer etc. Surely there must be a way to extract it in Flame.

        Best regards,

@super gnu - Haha. No but we DO have stained glass windows in our flame suite.

@vlado - All right. That's kind of what I was afraid of. I didn't know if you might be able to look at the two different .exr images with zdepth and see how one is different from the other.
I think we do have a ticket open with Autodesk but they aren't as good about customer service as vray is I think

The one and only difference is the name of the z-depth channel - the V-Ray one is named simply Z.
