Max depth not functioning?

Hi,

I have all my affected materials set to 100 reflections/refractions depth on their individual materials, but I'm still seeing Black on the render.

However I set the global Max Depth to around 20, the black's disappear?

What about if you use the reflections "Exit color"? By default it is black.

That's odd - would it be possible to attach a stripped down version of that scene for investigation ?
