  • VRayLightRect shadow not dimming

So I have a weird situation with a vray rectangle light.
I created the light (resized by the controls within the light). I turned on shadows.
The floor is a vray wrapper material wrapping a plain white vray material. I can only get the shadows to darken to a certain point and then it just stops darkening. If I try to darken it further (by turning down the light intensity) the shadow gets cut off in a straight line. As I turn the intensity lower and lower the line moves closer and closer to the object until there is no more shadow. Please see the attached image for an example.

    What's going on? Please advise.
    Thanks!

    Hi,

Very strange results, is it possible to send us your scene to test with?
Also what are the V-ray/Maya versions?

Edit: Actually we have reproduced this here, thank you very much for your report.

Sure thing. What email should I send the scene to?
It's a little big to post here.

      I'm on Maya 2014.

        Hello,

This behavior is somewhat expected and is not considered a bug. If you replace the rect light with a maya standard area one, you should get the same result.
Nothing much to do, besides lowering the light cut-off for the vray light to 0 and the shadows won't get that strange cut-off.

Not considered a bug!? Well that's strange.

I guess the real question though is, why? Why is it doing that? And if I want to get a shadow that is lighter than the one with the light intensity of .1 what options do I have (since turning the light intensity down does not decrease the shadow)? The problem wasn't the cut-off shadow so much (although I would never want the shadow to do that) but how to lessen the intensity of the shadow in the first place.

The reason is the matte surface via the wrapper (as far as I understood this is what you're using, correct me if I'm wrong).
I guess you can try and adjust the shadow brightness for the matte object, although it would be sort of faking it.
Lowering the light cut-off actually won't change the shadow intensity on a matte object.

I'm not sure this will quite cut it for you, but if you consider it as a possible solution, here's some screens:
