  • Glossy reflections below 0.75 - seeing normals of model.. HELP!

    Hi,

If my glossy reflections go below 0.75 then I begin to see the normals of the model..

Is there a work around other than using a different render engine? This seems to be a major problem.

    Thanks!

    Hi,
Did you try to enable "Fix dark edges" on the VRayMtl ?
Or play with "Soften edge" attribute ?

      Hi Damien ,

Unfortunately neither of those fix the problem.

thank so much for your help.

If anyone has any more ideas or suggestions. Please let me know.

      Thanks!

        Do you have strong bumpmapping?

Nope! I've tried to remove all bump maps as well.

if you experiment with a new maya scene. Just add sphere with an area light you'll see the problem by just lowering the glossiness below 0.75...

          This is a real pain

Perhaps the Cutoff Threshold ? (set to 0)

I will try tonight (i have no VRay here )

Try to add subdivision to the object; or try using a different BRDF model.

In general all render engines I've seen have similar issues on low-poly models where the smooth interpolated normals deviate significantly from the shape of the underlying geometry; sometimes the issues are more obvious, sometimes less, but no render engine has been able to avoid them completely in all situations.

              Best regards,
              Vlado
