  • Would be nice if the productions builds were updated more often

ok It seems like there are a bunch of features and about 90
5 of the answers to any problem are "use the latest nightly"

Working in production this is really becoming a pain in the ass and making it almost impossible to depend on v-ray. and Quite frankly I'm getting really tired of getting crap from the higher ups when things don't work as advertised. The Documentation is almost never up to date, the tutorials are always out of date or are for 3dsmax or both.

Just saying perhaps instead of having nightly builds I would rather have a Solid build every month or 2 and have the docs and tutorials updated accordingly.

This is especially a problem for those of us that have to rely on outsourced rendering and going to a nightly build is not always an option.

I can't be the only one frustrated with this am I?

I can understand your concerns; there's definitely place for improvement there - preparing an official build is a hassle and we've been doing it less often than we should. With the 3.0 release, we do plan to have more frequent updates to the stable builds and get them at least to the level of the 3ds Max updates (about twice a year). Moving the docs to Confluence should also help with their update speed.

On the other hand, the 2.x nightly builds are relatively stable now; we don't do any active development there - only bug fixes and smaller feature requests are added, so they are more or less safe to use. Quite a few productions have successfully sailed entirely with nightly builds, and our ability to implement requests and bug fixes in a matter of days has been quite useful.

So the latest nightlies are 2.4X I mean if nothing else I I would think that the OSX version should be updated for feature parity There are so many things that the OSX users re-forced to use the nightlies for that are in the standard production build for windows. Like the DR options.

that aside a lot of use have to outsource our rendering and a fair amount of the render farms are not using the nightlies builds. I only know of one that allows this.

But I guess most of my issues have to deal with the docs and tutorials. it is very frustrating to always get pointed to some out of date 3dsmax tutorial when you are a Maya user.

Hmpf, which DR options? We make the builds from the same sources; all the options that we have in the Windows builds are also in the Mac builds.

I'm not sure that putting out stable builds every month will make this any better - they will have way more work to update the farms either way. Six months seem a somewhat acceptable compromise, if we manage to keep that.

I suppose it is somewhat annoying; but on the bright side, the V-Ray things generally carry over fairly easily between packages.
