I found this out when I set the path as relative to the project like everything else in maya such as textures. when you do this they fail to load. it would be really helpful if this was supported.
it is especially important when ter are multiple OSes in a facility.
for instance lets say that I have my IR and LC maps in the same folder as my textures "source images" under the ROOT of the project.
textures will load with a path that is simply "sourceimages/filename.jpg"
if you try this with a IR or LC map they will fail to load. for some reason you have it setup so that the IR and LC maps must have the full path. This causes many problems when loaded on different operating systems like from a mac to windows or vise versa.
Also this is out of line with the redo of things in V-ray like proxies. They support relative paths and will load just fine. as a matter of fact This is the only part of V-ray for Maya that is like this.
