  • Vrmesh bug causes Linux fatal crash

I've submitted a bug report (#558826) for V-Ray 2.45 which involves a certain vrmesh causing a fatal crash on Linux during commandline rendering. I realize you're busy getting the 3.0 release ready, but this is a really nasty bug that appear here in projects where we convert CAD data into polys and then make a vrmesh from that.

I've sent you a reproducible case involving a vrmesh file, which causes the fatal crash.

Since our render farm is all Linux, we're actually having a hard time crunching out certain scenes because of this bug. The workaround is to render on workstations (which are Windows), but these machines are usually not available for rendering during office hours. Or we have to go off-site...

It would be fantastic if you could bump the priority up on this one and fix this nasty bug before dropping V-Ray 2.x development/support.
    Best Regards,
    Fredrik

Thanks Vlado, I believe it should be ticket no #558826. That's what's in the mail thread's subject.

Hm, have you tried newer builds?
I'm rendering the piece you've sent us and it seems to render fine with the latest build 2.55.01 rev24958

Unfortunately, this still crashes (only on Linux) here. See attached log: errorlog.zip

As a side note, you say 2.55.01 but when I query "vray version;" I get 2.45.01.

Are you using the scene I sent you along with the .vrmesh?

I've used vray standalone to render a scene and it reported 2.55.01. This is apparently the version of the vray core.
The V-Ray for Maya version is still 2.45. So excuse me for the caused confusion.

Hm, do you have the show whole mesh attribute set on any of the meshes?

I'll see what happens when loading the scene in Maya.

Aha, I'm actually using Maya 2014 here when I render and get the fatal error.

I actually managed to get it to render without a crash, please see the scenarios below!

Bounding box disabled, show whole mesh enabled: Fatal error
Bounding box disabled, show whole mesh disabled: Rendered without errors!
Bounding box enabled, show whole mesh enabled: Rendered without errors!

So you were right about that this may have something to do with "show whole mesh" then...?
                  Best Regards,
                  Fredrik

I'll try to debug it and try to fix the problem, but as workaround you can iterate all your scenes with mayapy and disable "show whole mesh" to prevent crashes.

Do you have the original mesh object in some other format (ma, mb, obj), so I can open it in maya and then try to find the part of the mesh that causes the problem?

Yes I do. I would not like to post the file here in the forums though. Can you provide me with an email address I can use to send a direct link?

Can you help me solve one mystery I'm seeing here?
The scene you gave me changes the up-axis mode for my whole maya (in the global preferences) every time I load it.
How have you setup your scene to achieve this effect and how to make it stop from happening?
