  • V3.0 Background environment texture not working

    Hi there,

Just upgraded to the latest official V3.0 build from the 3.0 beta version and now the background texture slot doesn't work properly. I'm using physical sun and sky (physical camera) and just want to use a background texture image. Every render is coming out an almost black background, including 8bit and 32bit hdri's. I played around with colour mapping variables and nothing changes the result. Here's the file along with basic render showing dark background.

    Thanks,

Back again, so I found the problem is with the Physical camera. If I switch off the Vray's physical camera attribute the background renders perfectly, turn it back on and it goes dark again. This is new since the last previous build, any tips on how not to apply the physical camera to the background environment texture slot?

I don't think this is new; in any case, in the color mapping section there is an option "Affect background", turn it off and the background will not be affected by the camera exposure. However this will not help if the environment if reflected or refracted in other objects.

      Best regards,
      Vlado

        Hi Vlado,
Thanks for the prompt reply. The "Affect Background' has no effect what so ever.

When "Affect Background" is unchecked/off the scene renders with black artefacts when using the "Colour Mapping and Gamma" mode.(See attached) There is no artefacts when using the other mode types. Had to manually adjust the image gain value to x50 to brighten the background HDRI.

This is considered as a bug and it has been added into our system.
We'll let you know when it is fixed.

Thank you very much for your collaboration.

just noticed that the artefacts will disappear when subpixel mapping is checked. However, besides those artefacts the "Affect background" checkbox has no effect at all. The background is currently always treated as anything else in the scene.
Would be awesome to have that fixed.

In vray 2.4 this worked fine (it was definitely missing the "colormapping only, no gamma" option which is very useful now!) but I was always looking for a good way to treat imagePlanes like a vray background. I had the workaround to place any single sided geometry between camera and imageplane and set the geometry to be a matte surface. That way the image plane didn't receive color mapping like if it was a background environment with "affect background" unchecked.
It would be great to have a checkbox for "affect imagePlanes" or just treat imagePlanes as background.

I'm aware of the option to pipe a backplate image into the vray environment slot, setting the mapping type to screen. But I actually need the option to have multiple cameras with backplates within the same scene and in that case it's perfect to use imagePlanes.

              best regards,

              Manuel

                Hi,

Try to add a V-Ray Rende ID element to your setup. It should solve the problem with "Affect background" option till our developers manage to fix it.
Please let me know if this workaround works for you.

                  Hi,

that fixed the problem! Works exactly as expected. The workaround for image planes is working again, too.

Thanks a lot for the prompt solution and best regards,

                        Hi Svetlozar / Vlado,

Any ETA on when this bug will be fixed? Its been a while and considering it affects every job I work on I was hoping to get it resolved sooner rather than later?

                        Thanks
                        Peter

I think this issue has been fixed for the next official service pack, but I am not 100% sure since there are several reports about Affect Background option.
Would it be possible to attach the scene again since the link is expired?
