  • Duplicate-->Instance meshes are rendered really slowly

    Hello,

This is happening on both new and old VRay versions :
    -VRay 3.05.04 build 25322, 02 decembre 2014, Nightly Build.
    -VRay 2.25.01 build 23639, 24 septembre 2013, Nightly Build.

We have a simple object, that we want to duplicate a lot (1300 times).
So we create mesh instances of it :
Edit-->Duplicate special (Geometry type = Instance)

When rendered in VRay, it takes 2 hours per frame, and most of the time the cpu does nothing (0% use).
The logs are filled with thousands of lines like this :

[2014/Dec/9|01:02:02] V-Ray warning: Object |BAMB:ALL|BAMB:geo_grp|BAMB:bamb_grp|BAMB:bran_grp |BAMB:bran5_grp|BAMB:bran9_msh|BAMB:bran1_mshShape has more than one VRayObjectProperties connected to it!

If we use real geometry (1300 objects) instead of instanced duplicates, the render takes 5 minutes instead of 2 hours.

Is this a known problem ?

Sorry I can't send the scene because of an NDA.

    Thanks.

So make sure the object properties are in order, not sure why this would be an issue.

Second thing to check would be dynamic memory limit, low dynamic memory will result in such render time.

Why an instance would need more memory than a standard object with the same poly count ?

It doesn't; instances actually use less memory. It would be best to send a scene to support@chaosgroup.com so that we can figure out what's wrong.

As we can't send the 40 Mbytes scene because of an NDA, we tried to cut it to a smaller size, or to create another from scratch.
But since yesterday the scenes that are called as reference into that scene have been modified, and we can't reproduce the problem anymore.
So, if we find a way to easily replicate the problem, I will keep you posted.

          Thanks.
