  • Black Highlights

    Hi All,

I'm running into an issue suddenly where my highlights appear as black holes. Hasn't been happening with other objects but out of the blue with this new one I'm in the process of texturing. Any thoughts or insight?

I'm Rendering with V-Ray 3, GI at Medium Animation settings. Color Mapping set to exponential and my viewer set to sRGB. Lit with a V-Ray Dome Light.

are you using ggx brdf? I think it was happening when your highlite glossy value was 1 or 0 (cant remember)

Nope. Blinn from what I remember. I'll see if GGX changes anything.

I have a specular map connected to my glossiness value but even when I apply a material only (no maps) it does it.

hmm in those black parts what is the pixel value? is it 0 or - inf? if you put a single mtl override with mirror reflection does this show up still? could be issue with the geo?

It's hard to see what's going on without the scene, it looks like some kind of color inversion is happening - do you have any extreme color mapping?

          Best regards,

Thanks for the input so far. I'm going to get to some troubleshooting early next week and try to figure it out.

Vlado, I've had exponential mapping set for the longest time at default values so I'm not sure if it has anything o do with it. I came across it once before and switching from linear to exponential seemed to fix it. Not sure if something else is overriding it now.

So I had a chance to attack the problem this weekend. Was having major render time issues so I reset to default and slowly built it back up. Problem seems to have disappeared. So seems like it was some sort of render setting issue. Not sure what. I've also thrown on the GGX setting and liking things so far.

              Thanks for the input, Folks.

              Cheers,

              O.
