  • Lightmeter: cannot open file

    Hi,

I try to use the lightmeter in an "old" scene then get this error : "// Error: Lightmeter: cannot open file" ...
If someone knows where to search for bugs in my scene (lights, render settings ?...) you're welcome. It's a huge scene with lot of lights ...

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Can you ensure that you have writing privileges for the configured output (images) folder for the scene? (File => Project Window => Primary Project Locations => Images)
The lightmeter reuses the baking functionality so if you cannot save the results from baking (or normal rendering) then the lightmeter will not be able to work.
Since this is an old scene maybe it's output folder is no longer available...

    And are you under Linux?

      Hi Viktor,

Yes I can write into the "images" folder, in fact it works for a fresh scene in the project, and I'm under Win7,
I'll try to de-bug light by light to understand what is the pb.
This functionality is really great to set lights perfectly, so I need to understand why it works in some cases and not in others ...
I'll keep you informed when I'll find the trouble maker !

We can have a look at the scene as well if you send it over to: support@chaosgroup.com

          Hi,

You can also try to delete everything in the scene except for the lightmeter and the error should continue to be there.
Also can you try setting a different output folder or something.. (this error message is from the implementation which I wrote)

            Hi Zdravko,

So I've deleted everything, opened on other pc : same pb.
I've tried again a new scene under the same project and it works.

And I've just reopened the scene to verify it before sending to you and now it works ....... but still not on the other pc ...real strange.

Scene is attached (69Ko) with only light setup.

Hi! I found out what the issue is...

You will have to remove the vrayRE_Lighting render element from the scene...
The lightmeter depends on render elements + baking and it creates a lighting RE which gets named vrayRE_Lighting1 and then the output image has a different name that what is expected.
This issue will be fixed in the future but for now you will have to remove that RE when using the LM...

And when the scene worked the last time you tried it - it just re-used the baking output from the new empty scene (filenames matched - something like baked-VRayLightMeterShape1.1.lighting.hdr)

              Sorry for the inconvenience

                Yes great !

It's not really a pb since the lightmeter is usefull for setting lighting but not render, so thanks a lot for the explanation !

                Cheers
