  • Xgen / maya 2015 SP5 / Vray 30504

    Hi everyone,

What about Xgen ? I'm trying to use it to scatter plants in my scene, following everything from here, and all my attempts (even with a scattering of spheres on a plane) end with same results : crashes at start or end of the render. I've tried with many scenes and it's always unstable.

Do I have to check my config or there is something to know to avoid crashes ?

    Hello,

What is the build number that you are using? Also what OS are you running? Is there anything specific to your render settings - GI for example or anything else.

      Hi Georgi,

      Build is 25735, running Win7,

I've tried on simple scene sphere as archive a plan a receiver , Gi, no Gi ... Maya is crashing, Vray seems to continue the job (nothing bad happens in the console during a RT until Maya quits)

(NB : Just ran the SP6 update and nothing better happens)

All maya 2015 versions crash when using Archives with V-Ray materials in RT. If not the first time RT is fired, then a subsequent will crash.

I tried Maya 2016 which got released a few weeks/days ago and there are no crashes there. This was a known issue which we had reported atleast an year ago to Autodesk and it seems fixed in 2016. We haven't released V-Ray for Maya 2016 yet, but there are nightlies...

          Thanks Viktor,

I'll try to test a few scenes with Blinns, because I've tried Maya 2016 with a 2016 nightly then it crashed each time in the new hypershade...

          Thanks for the info.

The Maya 2016 nightly builds from this week support better the official Maya 2016 version. All previous builds are for PR49.

              Hi Ivaylo,

I'm downloading the last build, and going to try it right now.

I just got sent a night build, Vray 30504 for maya 2016. It installs correctly but for some reason I will not see my license? maya 2015 with latest stable release works fine, and I can see that maya 2016 doesn't take up a license either. It's like it doesn't recognize it? Do I need to do anything differently to use the night builds?

What is the error message that you get when you try to render? The nightly builds use the exact same license as the official builds. So make sure that the V-Ray license server is running and that on your workstation the settings are correct (you can check with the setvrlservice utility or from the start menu > all programs > chaos group > v-ray for maya 2016 > change license settings.

                  Best regards,
                  Vlado

                    So,

Tried 2016 and it works like a charm with the new hypershade , it's a real pleasure to work on shaders !

About Xgen, it's a big mess , but I don't think Vray is part of the problem in my case, I've not even been successful creating an archive with a simple polygon sphere with a blinn on it, [Error ythonInterpreter ...] and no time to re-install everything , I'll use spPaint3D to scatter plants, grass, tree .... it's long but robust !

If you don't have mentalray installed for 2016 try unloading the xgenMR.py plugin (next to xgen) - it will complain (and fail) while exporting archives if mentalray is not installed

Thanks Bigboss for the clue ... VrayScatter seems good but no demo, and since I'm a happy owner of carbonScatter ... which doesn't use native Vrayproxy ... and which I don't use ... I prefer to use a free tool !

VRayScatter use native instances/functions from VRay at rendertime. So, this is fast.
With XGen you have a "translate Maya to VRay". You will get heavy time of "translate scene" when you will have 10 000 000 instances with Xgen.
But, if it is for little things, yes, use XGen.
