  • 2D displacement and subdivision

I'm using 2D displacement (as opposed to Normal displacement) for a project as it yields better results in less time, but when I enable 2D displacement VRay appears to ignore the "Render as subdivision surface" attribute. Anything I'm doing wrong?!?

EDIT: seems like this works if I use OpenSubdiv?

It works as expected here, can you send us a sample scene for investigation?
Let us also know the exact versions of V-Ray/Maya/OS that you are using.

      Maya 2015 Extension 1 SP5
      VRay 3.00.01, core version 3.05.07
      Linux - Ubuntu 12.04

I've sent a scene to support with the thread title as subject. Simple scene, two low poly cubes with displacement - one using Normal Displacement, the other using 2D Displacement. The one using 2D doesn't smooth at render time.

      Thanks!

Thank you very much for the file - we managed to reproduce the issue.
I haven't use a texture in the tests I did that's why the geometry was rendered with subdivisions.
It seems that Render as subdivision surface is not supported with 2D Displacement, you may use OpenSubdiv attribute for that purpose as you've already found.

OK, glad it wasn't just me then!

Might it be an idea to update the VRay docs with a note about this so that others don't spend time trying to work out what's happening? Thanks!

I think it would be better to make that option inaccessible when 2D Displacement is selected.

Yep, that would indeed be better!
