  • z_depth Render Element Problem

    Hi,
I´ve a strange z_depth prob and don´t know if I make a mistake here in setup the RE!?
The scene has some objects, You see it in the channel, and the rest is empty (means black in beauty pass).

When I try to use that image in nuke, there happens strange ugly things with the Z-Tools...
I mean, that the empty space must be black - its far far away...

(When I put a plane behind my objects, the channel becomes darker then the front-objects, because its more far away then the hereos...
...but in this case, I need for all renderlayers an additional layer for only producing the correct zChannel - not good!!!)

    Thanks for your hints,
    Jörg

      Hi,
The white background is caused by the filtering option being OFF. It's a known bug, if you turn it ON the z_depth RE should render fine.

        Ivan, thanks for Your response.
The problem is, that I need unfiltered zChannels for the z-tools!
So, the question is, is it planned to work on this bug?
        Cheers, Jörg

Another approach will be to leave Depth Black to 0 and set the Depth White instead as the Z-Depth channel uses by default.

            thanks for the hint....but...
            This inverses the problem only!
Now You get a black back, where white would be the correct one
I hope it will be fixed in the near future.
            Cheers

If I understand the problem correctly, there is currently a bug in V-Ray that will cause the background to be black even though the far value is white. As a workaround you can create a sphere for the background:

              1. In the Maya scene create a primitive sphere and scale it to be super gigantic. If you can't see it in the clipping planes, don't worry. V-Ray still can see it.
              2. In the render stats turn off "cast shadows" (so it won't block the lights in your scene)
              3. Apply a Surface material to it and set the matte color to black (so it wont affect the alpha)

And if you tick "get depth from camera" and "unfiltered" you will get the value of the near clipping plane in the backgound of the zdepth-channel.
                I recently reported this behaviour.

                Cheers!
