  • VrayRT Issues - Noise and DOF

As I continue to experiment with GPU rendering, I have two questions:

    1. Is animated noise not supported on the GPU? It's checked in my render settings but all noise is static in the renders.
    2. Documentation suggests depth of field is supported with physical camera, but I've never been able to get that working. I always use physical camera, but no DOF no matter what I try. Is there some special trick?

Animated noise pattern should be working, but I will double-check.

The physical camera dof is dependent on the scene scale and Maya units and seems to be working. Can you post an example where it doesn't?

    Best regards,
    Vlado

It's not really scene specific, I've never been able to get it to work even with very basic, default setups. If I create a new scene with two spheres and a light, and drop a camera in with Physical Camera and Depth of Field enabled, BRBR, BRLC, tweaks to any and all settings, doesn't matter - there is no depth of field in CUDA RT renders.

This is the case on both of my rigs with different GFX cards and specs so it's probably not the system.

No special setup is required in order to get the DOF effect working.
Make sure that DOF is enabled under the Physical Camera settings, set the desired focus distance and control the strength of the DOF via F-number value:

Thanks for the reply. I definitely have my cameras set up as you've specified.

Here's something I had failed to mention - I am trying to preview DOF in the viewport as I dial in settings, which even your test file will not do. I now realize that DOF does work for me in batch mode ("Render Animation with V-Ray RT"), so is this just a viewport limitation? If so, it sure would be nice to have that functionality!

We don't have a preview for the DOF in the viewport at the moment. It could be added in the future, but it might not be easy to implement.

Thanks for the reply! So just to be clear, when I select V-Ray RT as the Renderer for a viewport, the result that is shown is NOT the same as what would be generated in a batch RT render? Are there any other differences besides just DOF?

It will work if you IPR in the Maya render view or the V-Ray VFB. For the viewport RT, it seems the problem is that we don't know which camera we are rendering.

                Best regards,
                Vlado

Yeah it's funny - Just an hour ago I discovered that IPR will send an RT session to the VFB. This is better than using a viewport in my opinion, so I'm happy!

Any word on the issue of static noise in RT?

                  Thanks!!

Just did a quick test with RT CPU and GPU and the renderer works as Animated noise pattern is always OFF. I going to update the issue in our system with this information. Will keep you posted about any news on that matter.

We'll be adding an option to use the GPU as a production renderer type and then it will work fine.
