  • matte surface casts shadow onto another matte surface

    Hi,

I am experiencing an issue where matte surfaces casting shadow onto each other in Vray for Maya 3.1. From what I recall, this wasn’t an issue in 3.0. I am wondering if something has changed or my setup is off.

Here is the wireframe. I roughly reconstruct the container and ground based on the background plate.

The container and ground are assigned with Vray material where plate is projected from shot camera for reflection.
Both container and ground are also assigned with VrayObjectProperties with settings below.
    Matte Surface: on
    Alpha Contribution: -1
    Shadows: on
    Affect Alpha: on
No GI on other mattes: on
Matte for all secondary rays: Disable.

    Beauty render:
The issue: the container which is a matte surface. Its shadow is already in plate, but it also casts shadow onto the ground which is also a matte surface. I cannot turn off Cast Shadow for the contain because I need it to cast shadow onto spheres (CG character to be integrated).

    Double shadow and wrong shadow:
I circle out the double shadow area where the container cast shadow onto the ground.

Maya scene with plate and HDR attached. (Maya 2016 and VRay 3.1 nightly build of late December 2015)

    always curious...

bump this up...this is my 2nd posts about this matte surface issue. Would like to know if I miss anything in setup or it's a bug.

Basically I don't want to have matte surface 1 (ex. wall) casts shadow onto another matte surface 2 (ex. ground), but the matte surface still need "cast shadow" flag to properly cast shadow on CG characters...I assume it's a common situation for CG and plate integration..

    Thanks.

Here how it looks like with the latest stable build:

If that is the result you are looking for update to the latest build and you are good to go.

        Hi Svetlozar,

Thanks for the response. I downloaded the latest 3.1 build and the result is what I expect. It's great that I also tried with VrayMtlWrapper based setup and it's rock solid.

        cheers,
        Jason
