  • bug: VRaySoftbox unfit for rendering animation

I have a scene which is lit by some VRay lights which utilize the VRaySoftbox texture.
The error occurs when rendering more than one successive frame - so basically an animation.

The first frame of the rendered sequence renders the rectangle light as shown on the left in the attached image (the VRaySoftbox attributes are shown as well). All other frames of the sequence render the rect light as shown in the middle of the image - brighter, with less noise producing more light and reflection in the scene.

Of course this is only visible when rendering the animation and is not obvious throughout look development.

The resulting problem is that if the animation is rendered through a renderfarm every batch of images has the first frame displaying a different light value and reflections then the other frame. So, if each render node gets a batch of like 10 frames, the resulting animation shows a false image every 10th frame, which of course produces visible flickering.

In order to get around this, every 10th frame needs to get re-rendered but not as a single image but as a sequence of two frames because, again, the first frame will have a different light value.
This is especially troublesome of each frame takes about 2 hours to render, so to get one frame fixed I need to render 4 hours (two frames).

Is this a bug or a known problem?
I cannot see any animation feature in the VRaySoftbox. The problem is gone when I deactivate the softbox and it only appears for the first frame to the next, no matter which time frame is rendered.

    Thanks.

Looks like a bug. Can you post the scene that you have shown above?

    Best regards,
    Vlado
I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

      Hi Vlado,

thanks for getting back to me. Here's the stripped down file. Only two rect lights with the softbox texture applied. Rendering is set to two frames so you only need to hit render. The first frame differs from the second.

      I am running VRay 3.40.01 on Maya 2016 Ext1 SP6, OSX

Let me know if you need more info.

      Thanks.

Confirmed - this is a bug. It is now logged in our bug tracker and the thread will be updated once there is a fix for this.

Bump. It's now VRay 3.6001 with Maya 2018 and the bug is still persistent and again it cost me valuable production and rendering time. Please fix this asap. It's not usuable.

I just checked in on that one and it's already fixed and targeted for the 3.60.02 patch. Even before we release it, I can let you know when it gets to the stable nightly builds and you can have the fix there.
