When that naughty little font corruption bug turns up, I find the main thing that frustrates me is the ability to choose and assign existing materials from the right click.
Seeing as this forum is full of such fabulously helpful folks I thought it only fair to share a script I'd written a while back.
I actually use it all the time anyway (the hypershade gets super cluttered and node names are messy etc).
It works perfectly for me, but of course I claim no responsibility.

It's pretty self-explanatory apart from the number next to the swatches - that's the multimatte material ID.
Assign materials to selected objects by clicking the swatch. most other things are right MB menus.
