Is it possible that the model has flipped normals in those areas?

normals are ok. it happens when you join the FastSSS2 material into the bump material, same result with basic sphere

edit: it happens only with bump shadow on

check your lights shadows bias. It may be negative
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

I believe this is due to absence of glossy frenel. I would suggest to disable fast sss reflection/specularity and add it back with vray blend material and vray material in additive mode.

Hm, the bump shadows is probably the issue...

            Best regards,

No, it's the "Bump shadows" option in the bump mapping section of the VRayMtl and VRayBumpMtl materials.

                Best regards,
