  • XGen to 3ds max - is there a way?

    Hi all

Is it possible to create a hair groom and export it to 3ds max for rendering?

If so what is the workflow to do so?

    Thank you.

    ~ Steve.

create a vray scene or use alembic...

Depends what you wanna do with it. But I believe you can make a vrscene out of it, and import that into 3ds max. Other than that, I dont think so. You could generate curves/polygons from XGen, and add a hair system for that in 3ds max. But there would still be a lot of job in 3ds max to get it too look the same in that case.
Vrscene should work I think though (but I haven't tried it myself).

Thanks so much guys for taking the time to answer !

Ill work out how to export a vrayscene from maya and import it into VRay.

Does anyone know how to import a .vrscene into 3ds max?

I get the feeling I may have to export the hair as curves and remodel the hair groom

Wish you all a happy and creative weekend !

Im having trouble doing that. Are you able to help me understand how to create a vray scene and an alembic file with the X-Gen hair in it? I would be incredibly grateful. Thanks so much again.

If I cant get it to work Ill probably just have to render my project in maya Vray which means buying another licence. So I hope to try every solution before that.

          Thanks

Thank you very much for that. Extremely helpful. May I ask how to load the vrscene into 3ds max for rendering?

              Thanks again

Thanks for your feedback, Im just trying to figure out how to create a vrscene using "https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...s+to+a+vrscene" and trying to figure out how to import a vrscene into 3ds max.

If it dont work Ill use the reconstruction method you mentioned.

                Cheers

you render them with the standalone version...

                  Rendering with V-Ray Standalone
One way to use .vrscene files is to render them with V-Ray Standalone, which is included with the installation of V-Ray for 3ds Max.
Open a V-Ray Standalone command prompt from Start menu > All programs > Chaos Group > V-Ray for 3ds Max NNNN > Tools > V-Ray Standalone command prompt. This will run V-Ray Standalone and will display all the available options. For example, if you want to render an already exported .vrscene file from frames 0 to 10, you can use a similar command:
                  vray -sceneFile="c:\temp\my_file.vrscene" -imgFile="c:\temp\render.png" -frames=1-10

OH! haha okay LOL no I dont want to do that haha

I thought a vrscene was a way to send Vray scenes between software like Maya to Max.

                    Thanks anyway.

Ill just have to recreate the whole groom LOL

Hmm. I ment importing the vrscene into your 3ds-max scene. Like a proxy. Doesnt 3ds max have a VRayScene Manager?

In maya, if you have only your xgen, with shaders etc in an empty scene, you can export that as a vrscene.
I usually then just import that file through the VRayScene Manager in a different scene/project, and it kind of works like a proxy. You can move it around, etc. But the shape/shaders is cached.
I dont use 3ds Max, so Im not sure how you import it there. But since VRay for 3ds max is normaly on par, or one step ahead of maya, I assume its in there already? I think Modo got some vrscene importer aswell, but I cant find how to do it for max.

Anyone for chaosgroup that can chip in and explain how its done (or if its not possible and you have to render in standalone as FSGFX explained)?

                        Thanks again.

I was informed that my only option was to use a command-line, stand alone renderer. But I was really hoping the 3ds max could import the vrayscene like a proxy. I'm pretty shocked I cant do that.

I wish I had the same VRayScene Manager in 3ds max ..... im gonna have to totally reconstruct my hair groom.

                        Thanks for your input.
