is there a way to get same uv smoothing as maya and mudbox is doing with the standard vray subD..?

if i use openSubD its getting better...
are there any drawbacks if i use openSubD..? i know in the past i got a lot longer scene conversion times...

Can you post a file with that object? I would like us to check the UV layout.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

We didn't code the OpenSubdiv library, so I can't really help. Hopefully the performance is improved in newer versions.

You can do one or two iterations of OpenSubdiv and use the V-Ray subdivisions for the rest.

i get the feeling pixar is giving away only the leafs of the tree and keeping the more important trunk...
opnesubD should be more efficent and faster not the other way around...

And you would be correct The purpose of OpenSubdiv is to make it easier for 3D application to support OpenSubdiv in their viewports for modeling purposes, so that Pixar artists can use more tools. It's not designed to help other renderers.
