  • Vray batch rendering freezing on computers with GPUs

    Hello,
We've been tracking an odd problem for years with Vray for Maya freezing on large batch renders. Our Vray renders would hang anywhere between 1-10% of the time on all of our workstations. Typically a single packet of frames will suddenly stop rendering but will indefinitely keep the mayabatch.exe open at 0% cpu useage. It seems to do this randomly, and from watching the log files, mayabatch.exe will freeze anywhere from starting to load plugs to somewhere in the middle of a render; there doesn't seem to be any common procedure it freezes at.

We noticed this never happened on our farm, until we added GPUs to 5 machines. The moment we did, all 5 of those machines started exhibiting the same random freezing behavior as the workstations. We also tested this with Maya software and Mental Ray without any freezing, but did notice some of the same behavior on Vray for Modo.

Currently we're testing this on Maya 2014sp2 and Modo 11.0v3
All the machines are running various intel chips, (2600k to 6900x), and a variety of Nvidia gpus, (geforce 580s to 1080s)
The same behavior shows up on both windows 7 and windows 10, and has been noticeable on every version of Vray since Vray 3.0

I would love to add more GPUs and take advantage of the denoiser but this has been crippling us so far.

Thanks in advance for any help!

As you've mentioned the denoiser, do the scenes that freeze have a denoiser render element added to them? If yes, is it set to actually denoise? Is the "hardware acceleration" option enabled for the denosier?

I tested various scenes with and without the denoiser and it seems to have no impact. This freezing was also happening with previous versions of Vray before the denoiser was introduced. The GPUs are just the only thing I can find in common with the computers that freeze so far.

You're rendering on the CPU, right?

Could you send us some logs from when this happened? It might be a good starting point for us.

We've been testing it on multiple Maya versions, and it looks like after 2014 SP4 the problem is rarely showing up. At the moment it looks like it's fixed!

OK, let us know if it happens again.
