We have been having this issue lately where the shadow pass created through matte surface looks smooth in alpha channel, but when it's inverted or merge (over) a background, the core of the shadow has lots of noise/artifacts. Even when we push the noise threshold to 0.001. Rendering with production CPU rendering (not GPU RT).
OS: Windows 10 x64, Maya 2017 update 3, Vray 3.52.02.
The alpha looks smooth.
When it's merged (over) a white background, the transition area is not that smooth anymore.
