  • VRayVolumeGrid disable preview

Maybe I'm missing something but is there a way to disable the preview for a VRayVolumeGrid?

Right now it takes forever to open our scenes that has a few heavy vdbs loaded because vray is previewing them in the viewport,
we don't care about the preview and would want to limit it too either no preview at all or at least boundingbox only in order to speed up our load times and frame stepping.

    Hi
you can set the Detail reduction in the Preview rollout to a very high value or you can disable individual channels like the Temperature, Smoke etc. for each VolumeGrid in the scene to improve the overall performance.

I can't set the "Detail reduction" higher then 20 which we already are so that doesn't help us at all and we only have a smoke and a velocity channel so nothing extra to turn off their either.

You can type a custom value like 100 without using the slider. AFAIK there is no way to completely turn off the preview for now.

I've tried that. Using the slider as you said is limited to 20, but also manually changing the value both in the attribute editor and the channelbox to anything above 20 doesn't work either for me, the value just jumps back to 20.
We're using vray 3.6001 in case that has something to do with the issue.

Actually you can do that in the VolumeGrid in V-Ray Next since we're doing a lot of improvements there. It isn't possible in the current 3.6 version of V-Ray, sorry about this. You can still use my other suggestion which is to individually turn off the individual channels for each volume grid. We're also working on some options to disable the viewport preview for such cases in future V-Ray releases.
