So...again, I feel like something was added to VRay without being comprehensively tested and prepared in order to work as it is suppose to work out-of-the-box (looking at you VRay GPU).
This time is all mighty ACES color workflow.
It's been more than a year (?) since it was added to 3ds max and Maya and it is still something that everyday VRay user can't really use to its full potential with some funky workarounds proposed around the forum - and even then, it is still doesn't work properly!
Chaos ACES tutorial on YT channel makes it look so easy! And yet if you wanna try it yourself you end up with none of your colors matching and even entirely breaking your Maya by loading custom .ocio file or the one downlaoded from github.
ACES documentation is really confusing, I am the most technical person in my studio and I still have problems to understand it fully, not to mention my collegues and other Vray users I know.
Perhaps, workflow by simply playing around with Filmic Tonemapping is rather straight forward but this way you loose all the benefits of improved GI in ACES.
It seems like the only person who tries to help us, users with it is Muhammed, but also, him linking us his private videos of how to use Tone Mapping in VFB simply does not put Chaos in a good light. All this stuff should be officially well, explained and documented online.
To support all my rant above, have a look at this thread.
https://forums.chaos.com/forum/v-ray...-2-1-with-aces
and there are good few threads like this around the forum.
I totally get the idea behind the new practice around the industry in recent years. Companies simply release unfinished products, features and they rely on their users spending hours of their precious time to find the solutions and workarounds. Every each of us wants to make VRay better but only if you guys respect our time! Autodesk, Adobe to name a few. Now, Chaos seems to be joining this bandwagon. We all have seen it with embarissing Vray GPU release (Yes, I do realize how much work was put into it) and how long it took to make it RATHER stable.
Much love,
Karol
