  • tex VrayFur gravity direction

    Hello,

It would be nice to be able to have more flexibility on the direction of VrayFur. I think with a texture in a gravity direction slot it would be possible.
The best would be to be able to paint the direction like for Maya Fur

    Is this possible ?

    regards,

In builds after the beginning of February you can specify a texture for a number of the VRayFur attributes, the way this can be done in the 3ds Max version. One of the textures specifies the direction of the bend. The textures are at the end of the AE interface.

oh, it must be the initial direction texture, right ? i missed it
And how does it work ? (if you have a simple explanation..)

      Thank you Vladimir !

It is similar to vector displacement if you have used that. And similar to normal maps as well. Values larger than 0.5 for the red channel will bend the hairs in the positive direction of the U axis of the mesh's UV space. Similarly values less than 0.5 for the red channel will bend the hairs in the negative direction of the U axis of the mesh's UV space. The same goes for the green channel and the V direction. For the blue channel, larger values will bend the hairs more towards the normal at the point on the mesh where the strand is growing.

        Hope this helps.

          Hello,

I never used vector displacement. I will have to experiment that as i find that VrayFur is really working well. For now i don't really see how to paint a proper texture for that so if anyone has some suggestions....

You can use the Maya 3d Paint tool to have some visual feedback in the viewport. You'll need a latest build as the VRayFur didn't have the textures affecting the viewport preview initially. You'll also need to assign a temporary material with the painted texture in the color slot. And then assign the same texture to the bend direction texture slot of VRayFur. Inside the 3d paint tool you should enable "Update on stroke" and "Save texture on stroke" and use the lowest resolution possible since the texture will be saved by Maya and then loaded by the V-Ray plug-in on each stroke end. Then clear the texture to (0.5, 0.5, 1.0). You can then try increasing/decreasing the red and green values to get a feel of the orientation of the UV space for your particular UV set. I tried this just now and it seems to work ok, at least on a simple plane.
