In 2011 maya introduced a new default for Smooth Mesh which is determined by several attributes, but the main one is "Boundary Rules". VRay is currently using the "legacy" setting and ignoring the new "crease all" setting.
And example of where "crease all" is useful is when smoothing a ribbon where we want to preserve the sharp corners yet still smooth the mesh along the direction of the ribbon.
