  • making Tiled Exrs for texture maps

    Vlado,

Scott had a great thread on the benefits of making tiled exrs... but not everyone (including me) has txmake available to them. And it sounds like the openEXR exrmaketiled sucks.... so....

Any word on if you plan on including a standalone utility to do this? or maybe something built in? this would be huge time saver/optimization in file texture loading.

Currently I am working on a character asset that is still in the texture painting phase and the files are 4k....and there are a bunch of them. Loading all of the texture files takes longer to do the test render once loaded. Is there any help you can give us?

(BIG HUGE SMILE WITH A CHERRY ON TOP)

    Thanks

    Andy

Tiled Exrs that are mip mapped would be fantastic. I just started using Mari from the Foundry and I highly recommend trying that software because it by defaults exports linear exr's that are tiled exrs, but it doesn't export Mipmapped ones. If Vlado could write a robust exr writer that would be awesome. I was able to render 36k maps in Vray without any issues.. It's really a beautiful thing. I still converted using txmake to get mip mapped tiled exrs, but even the non mipmapped files did render a lot better..

We are looking into ways to modify exrmaketiled, or the utility included with the OpenImageIO library...

        Best regards,
        Vlado
